“Steven? It’s you’re mother calling. I know you are probably busy training for your big match against Spike Kane this week, but this Sunday is also your birthday and I was wondering if you could possibly make it back to Michigan to see me for your big two five. Nothing special or anything just a quick visit. I know your such a big star and everything but your never too busy to see your mother. Love ya, bye.”
Click.
“You know, I haven’t been here in such a long time I was starting to forget what this place looked like.”
Steve said, running his palm across the stair rail of the house he grew up in. It brought back such a great sense of nostalgia in the National Champion. You could see in his eyes that his mind was almost overflowing with memories of his childhood. Learning life lessons, making friends, falling in love.
“Well maybe if you stopped by more than once a year your memory wouldn’t be so hazy.”
That was his mother, Debbie, teasing him through crossed arms and a playful scowl.
“Yeah I really should….”
Steve reaches up and pulls a picture of him and his date from his senior prom off the nail on the wall. His date was beautiful. She had an amazing dress that made her seem like a movie star and they looked genuinely happy together. A smile grows on Steve’s face.
“….being around here brings back a lot of memories.”
Debbie walks up behind her son and places her hand on his shoulder.
“It’s great having you here. I’m really happy you came. How long were you planning on staying?”
“I don’t know. Fallout is right around the corner so maybe just a couple days.”
He explains as he turns around to face her.
“Only a couple days? I hope everyone can make it on time.”
Steve seems a little confused by that.
“Make it on time for what?”
Debbie looks up at him like she just made a huge mistake.
“uh…..nothing.”
She turns and walks away but Steve wasn’t satisfied. He knew his mother and he knew that look.
“Yeah right nothing. What did you mean by that?”
Suddenly the answer struck him and if it were true he wasn’t going to be happy about it.
“No….tell me you didn’t plan a birthday party. I’m too old for a birthday party now.”
“I didn’t plan you a birthday party.”
Debbie said through shifty eyes.
“I planned you a surprise birthday party.”
Awesome sighs and does one of those frustrated face palms.
“Oh come on. Is it really necessary? I mean do we really have to do this?”
Debbie crosses her arms.
“This day only comes once a year. I don’t see you for Christmas or Thanksgiving so this is the only day that I can do something nice for you. Now you can either be happy and act surprised when everyone shows up or you can be a negative nancy all day, I don’t care. Either way, you’re having a surprise party.”
Steve tries to argue his case but Deb seems determined.
“Besides….I already bought the party hats.”
Debbie disappears around the corner for a few moments and returns with one of those cone party hats with the elastic chin string on the bottom and sets it on the top of Steve’s head.
“There, now don’t you feel festive?”
Awesome stands there staring at his mom with a less than satisfied look on his face. A bright yellow sponge bob square pants party hat standing straight up on the top of his head. If he really was as cool as everybody said he was, he felt that meter hit rock bottom. He slowly raises his finger up in the air and gives it a slow, pathetic twirl.
“woo……hoo…..”
Debbie smiles, obviously she ignored the loads of sarcasm dripping from her sons mouth.
“Okay, now I need you to run out to the garage. There’s still a few things I need to take out for this party.”
Awesome turns around and heads out the door leading towards the back. He walks outside and just before he reaches the side door to the garage, an odd rustle in the bushes catches his ear. Curious, he creeps up toward the sound and movement. He leans forward when suddenly from out of the bushes….something lunges for him!
“AHHHHHHHHH!!!!”
To be continued……
The handi-cam is running and Steve Awesome is standing somewhere. Some kind of room with seemingly no relationship to anywhere he’s been recently. The background was dark and all you could see was Steve standing there looking back at you. The National Championship glistening in the fluorescent lighting.
“You know Spike, ever since you earned the right to face me at Fallout, the fans have been comparing us. It’s one of life’s greatest questions. Is there really a God? What’s the meaning of life? Whose better? Spike Kane or Steve Awesome? I’ve asked people, after the shows I’d stick around and sign autographs and talk with the fans. I’d bring up the question and I’d get a long debate but never a clear answer. Do you have one? Mind you, I’m not asking for an egotistical answer where you toot your own horn and say yeah, I’m looking for one that’s more legit. One that comes from actual evidence and not one from the thought process of the guy who believes he’s the God of chair shots and table spots.”
“I mean, if you honestly try to sit down and think about it Spike, I don’t think a straight answer even exists. How could it man? Despite maybe a few differences were exactly the same. The first two men to become a triple crown champion, hall of fame spots for each of us and a reserved spot in history as two of the best men in the business. It’s like comparing Hogan and Macho Man, The Rock and Stone Cold, Coke and Pepsi, Star Wars and Lord of The Rings. We could be at it for days but never would we ever be able to generate a clear answer. You can compare victories and accomplishments till your blue in the face but the facts will always remain.
Whatever you’ve done……I’ve done.
Whoever you’ve beaten……I’ve beaten.
We’ve seen the Spike era and we’ve seen the Steve era.
“We’ve been all around the world, taking all the opposition that ever came are way and nine times out of ten it’s been us standing tall. We’re trailblazers, trend setters, younger wrestlers spend time studying us in hopes that they can learn a few things. There’s absolutely no reason to brag about your past to me Spike…so save your breath.
So what do you say to the guy whose done everything you’ve done in your career? I guess it just all comes down to what’s inside. Whose heart beats stronger? Since you took a stab in the dark and labeled me as some kind of stereotypical trend whore and I’m going to turn it around and label you as the social outcast. The guy who stood against the wall, creating the “cliques” you say I bounced between. You represent the kid that nobody really knew but kept in the back of there mind. You created an underlying fear in the hearts of everybody around you because you put on this hardcore front.
What you represent Spike…is danger.
It all makes sense. The God of Xtreme moniker. The mass amounts of bloodshed I’ve seen you lose in the ring. Danger is your thing, it’s what you do. It’s why ninety percent of wrestlers today are afraid to step into the ring against you. There afraid of what you’ll do. Your unstable….your crazy.
As for me?
I’m the total opposite.
If your fear then Spike I’m the bravery it takes to stand up to that fear. If your insanity makes you unstable, my sanity keeps me completely focused. If your danger….then I’m going to stand up and look that danger dead set in the pupil and tell him that I’m not afraid. I’m perseverance Spike….I’m hope! I have never backed down from ANY challenge in my whole damn life and I don’t intend to this Sunday when we clash for this National Title I wear over my shoulder. I’ve been beat down, broken, left for dead but I get back up. Your best buddy Falcon tried to keep me down…..but I got back up. I had Homeless Harold try to literally kill me. He beat me to a bloody pulp and left me for dead but guess what happened Spike?
I….
Got……
Back…….
UP!
And I will keep getting back up until the day that I die. Until there’s no more energy left in my body. Until we FINALLY have an answer to one of life’s greatest questions. What happens when two of the greatest wrestlers in the world lock up for a belt and pride?
I still don’t know….but it will be fun finding out.”
Static.
