Tapping his fingers on the steering wheel, he sat in the car. He was pulled in at an Exxon, just to get gas. Cari had to used the rest room again, Xavier didn’t mind stopping. In the back of the car the sound of Belle sleeping and Landon playing with his toy jet plane. The little boy made the sound effects of the air plane. Looking up in his rear view, Xavier watched his children. The man couldn’t help but smile, his hopes, his dreams laid in those two beautiful kids.
Pulling the keys out of the ignition, Xavier slid them into his pocket. He started to open the door when he heard Cari scream. He bolted up right shutting the door, “Landon watch your sister, don’t talk to anyone!” he moved quickly around the car to hear a gunshot and then a man sprint out of the store. Cari stood in the doorway, Xavier didn’t see any blood, “Xavier…stop!” she yelled, once he knew she was okay, he was sprinting after the man.
Cari pulled out her cell phone and called 9-1-1, staring in the distance as Xavier chased down the man….
The previous night…
Xavier looked over at her, they had these kind of conversations before, each time she was more and more worried.
He looked at her and gave her a weak smile, she started to cry and put her head on his shoulder.
Cari looked up and laughed
Xavier pouted and she kissed him…
Present time...
Xavier was booking it, he was only a few yards away from the guy. He had a bag clutched in one hand, and what looked like a revolver in the other. He used one shot…so he’s got five left…lets hope if he turns it on me, he misses… Catching distance, Xavier realized he was more in shape then the man, that’s when the man slowed down and turned. Xavier lost control of his body, instincts took over, he moved to the left as the man opened fire, Xavier stayed low and moved back to the right weaving in a zig-zag, he was faster than the man’s reaction. Suddenly Xavier was staring at the revolver head on.
What happened next, couldn’t exactly be explained. Xavier blacked out, he lost control of his body. The gun laid on the ground, a shot had fired. The man was on the ground in a choke hold. Xavier had a blank stare in his eye. The police were there soon after and separated Xavier Cross from the man, who had passed out just seconds before. Xavier was questioned by the officers, and examined by paramedics.
He pulls a card out, and hands it to the officer.
Cari is sitting in the car, holding Belle both of them were crying. Landon on the other hand was looking around watching the police officers talk to his father. Xavier approached the car and sat down. Landon jumped over the middle and onto his father’s lap.
Hugging his dad, Xavier smiled. There was one thing a man always wanted to be, a hero to his son. Landon climbed into the back again, a smile etched on his face. Cari gave him a look and something bubbled in his stomach. Xavier Cross knew he had something coming to him, he just wasn’t sure you. They had a strict rule between the two that they wouldn’t argue in front of the children. Giving a sigh, Xavier bucked up and looked at his family.
Scene fades…
The TV turns off, as Xavier shakes his head. He leans forward looking at his wife, who was angry.
At this point Cari is on her feet, she throws a vase in his direction. Xavier ducks as it shatters up against the wall. Looking up, he sees that his wife as gone. Knowing her, she needed to be alone right now to cool off, going after her would make things worse… Picking himself up, he looked at the damage she had done.
Smiling a bit, he opens the front door and goes to stand out in the cold night air. The stars were lit up, and he was all alone.
Standing up he looks in the doorway, seeing his wife crying. He gives her a smile, as she shakes her head.
He moved towards her, his hand finding her cheek. His fingers gentle moved the tears rolling off her cheek.
He gives her a dumb smile, she laughs and shakes her head. Which makes him pout. She pulls him in and kisses Xavier gently, as she shook her head.
She let him go and walked away back into the house.
Xavier’s jaw drops a bit, then he laughs, as he turns to the lean on the porch.

The previous night…
Cari Cross
“Xavier…you’re getting older, you’ve toned it down a lot with wrestling, not taking unnecessary risks, and you’ve controlled yourself…but you can’t do this forever…”
Xavier looked over at her, they had these kind of conversations before, each time she was more and more worried.
Xavier Cross
“I know sweetie, I’m investing the money I make into our children, and from there I’ll pick up a trade, go back to school. I know I can’t wrestle forever, but I’ll do it as long as I can…”
He looked at her and gave her a weak smile, she started to cry and put her head on his shoulder.
Xavier Cross
“I have more of a chance dying on the street, or working construction. Have faith in me, I’m not going anywhere until we are old and you get sick of me…”
Cari looked up and laughed
Cari Cross
“I already am sick of you.”
Xavier pouted and she kissed him…

Man
“Now ****ing die…”

Officer Johnston
“Look, Mr. Cross. You did a great thing here today, but don’t get a vigilante sense of views now. We could charge you with assault…”
Xavier Cross
“Look he had a ****ing gun in my face. I stopped him, something that would have taken you pigs a week to do. Legally you can charge me with whatever you want, but I did your job. If you got a problem talk to my lawyer. I’m taking my family to dinner, so if you got anything else to say…”
He pulls a card out, and hands it to the officer.
Cari is sitting in the car, holding Belle both of them were crying. Landon on the other hand was looking around watching the police officers talk to his father. Xavier approached the car and sat down. Landon jumped over the middle and onto his father’s lap.
Landon Cross
“You did it daddy! You got the bad guy! You’re a hero!”
Hugging his dad, Xavier smiled. There was one thing a man always wanted to be, a hero to his son. Landon climbed into the back again, a smile etched on his face. Xavier Cross
“I love you guys…”

Female Reporter
“This was the scene at a small town Virginia gas station today, where the female cashier was saved by a quick phone call from one Miss Cari Cross, as the man who decided to hold up and subsequently shoot the cashier decided to flee. Was stopped by NCW wrestling star, Xavier Cross. The man was taken into police custody in a worse-for-wear condition, as Mr. Xavier Cross choked the man out. The cashier was taken to the Stonewall Jackson-Corrilian hospital in critical condition. This reporter sees a man who is a idol in the ring, being a hero out the ring, back to you John..”
The TV turns off, as Xavier shakes his head. He leans forward looking at his wife, who was angry.
Cari Cross
“Why did you go after him?”
Xavier Cross
“He was a punk, he deserved what he got….”
Cari Cross
“It wasn’t your job…you could have been killed…”
Xavier Cross
“I didn’t get killed, I’m still here aren’t I? I stopped him…I’m a…”
Cari Cross
“A Hero? Someone who takes the chance of leaving his family as he goes off to die a glorious death of stopping a guy who held up a gas station? If that’s a hero, then I don’t know what this world’s come too.”
Xavier Cross
“I don’t understand what you’re so upset about?”
Cari Cross
“I’m upset because you didn’t think. He could have killed you!”
Xavier Cross
“He didn’t though….”
Cari Cross
“That’s not the point, you took an unnecessary risk, the police would have caught him. You left the kids in the car to chase down glory, you make me sick…”
Xavier Cross
“I almost forgot she used to play softball….**** that would have hurt..”
Smiling a bit, he opens the front door and goes to stand out in the cold night air. The stars were lit up, and he was all alone.
“Okay…so maybe it was stupid of me to chase down the guy. I could have gotten killed. In a single instance I risked everything just to prove I could do it. Pretty pathetic… Reflecting I’m glad I stopped the guy, but something could have happened to me. I made a huge mistake leaving my children alone even for a second. Landon is convinced I’m a hero, every time he says it, it makes Cari wince, and I end up getting it like I did back there…My ego is ridiculous, I can’t believe I almost called myself a hero in there….I’m not a hero, I’m just some guy. I don’t try and paint a bogus picture anymore, I thought I was the man the world loved, then hated. I thought I was some big shot, but I can clearly see that I’m just a man. I faced my mortality down the barrel of a gun for the second time in my life. My wife called an ambulance, and reacted quickly to save a woman’s life. I stopped a man who took a few hundred dollars, and pulled a trigger. I think the wrong person was called a hero…”
Standing up he looks in the doorway, seeing his wife crying. He gives her a smile, as she shakes her head.
Cari Cross
“Stop being an idiot…”
Xavier Cross
“You still mad at me…”
Cari Cross
“Very…”
He moved towards her, his hand finding her cheek. His fingers gentle moved the tears rolling off her cheek.
Xavier Cross
“You’re so pregnant and emotional…”
Cari Cross
“…I’m going to kill you…”
Xavier Cross
“Marry me?”
He gives her a dumb smile, she laughs and shakes her head. Which makes him pout. She pulls him in and kisses Xavier gently, as she shook her head.
Cari Cross
“If you really want to be a hero…don’t be an idiot…”
She let him go and walked away back into the house.
Xavier Cross
“Does this mean I can sleep in the bed tonight?”
Cari Cross
“Nope…”
Xavier’s jaw drops a bit, then he laughs, as he turns to the lean on the porch.
“You heard her folks…looks like I gotta live, and I wouldn’t mind doing that any other way then this coming Friday. In my second match in my NCW return, I look to continue my tag team streak with my new partner, Gabriel Karras. I can’t lie, the guy gives me the creeps but he’s an athlete with a story. I have to put my faith in him, and for better or worse, I will do what it takes to bring out the best in my partner. To be honest, I don’t know squat about you Callaway, I’ve tried to do research and I couldn’t find anything about you. Looks like I got to think on the fly if I find myself between the ropes with you. On the other hand, the first time I heard of Fergus Callaghan, I new I had a…colorful character on my hands. Standing at 6’ and 225 lbs you are a good sized athlete Fergus but the thing I’m most concerned about is your unpredictability. I don’t know if that comes from drinking or what, but your ring style is very…unique to say the least. To be honest, after the match I wouldn’t mind win or loss, going out to a bar and raising a pint for a good match. Drinks on me. Either way, I look forward to this high octane match, and I’m gunning for a two match win streak starting the hot roll that is Xavier Cross. See you Friday….”
