“Don’t be a failure.”
I keep replaying what Martin told me when I first started working with him. Unlike anyone else in my life, he saw something nobody else didn’t, including myself. It’s funny how such a simple sentence by someone can kind a define you.
“Begin each day as if it were on purpose.”
He lived by that. He taught me that even the worse things in life happen for a reason, whether it is for the good or for the bad. That life has a chosen path for you. I wouldn’t say he was a follower of Christ, but he definitely believed in a higher power.
“When it’s your turn to shine, shine as bright as you can.”
Was it my turn to shine though? Would this be the moment that I look back on and remember it as my beginning? I have come a long way since my XFC days. I’ve come a long way since I joined nCw. I still have far to go though.
“When opportunity presents itself, take it.”
I have had opportunities come and just as quickly vanish. I use to think it was because I was scared of success. Maybe I was… maybe I still am. The difference this time around is that I finally believe I deserve the success.
“Are you ready?”
I break my train of thought and glance to my right… it’s Falcon. I smirk as I acknowledge his question.
“Are you?”
He can only smirk back. I’ve never seen a more confident person.
“You know Cam, this is the moment when we are going to look back and say it was our beginning.”
He was right. If Falcon and I both win at Battlegrounds and Rob retains, it would mean we would have the top three belts in the company. A definite statement to the rest of nCw! The power would be in our court for once.
“It definitely has the makings to be a very special night.”
I have to be pessimistic here though.
“It also has the potential to very disappointing.”
As much as Falcon and I would like to ignore that… it doesn’t take away from it being factual. We knew we both had to capitalize.
“Cam, the reason I’m here though.”
I was all ears.
“I just want to make sure you are dealing with everything alright.”
“Yeah, everything is fine.”
I knew that answer wouldn’t satisfy Falcon though.
“I know what it was like going from a “who are you?” to someone of relevance. It was a big change.”
I could already feel the change.
“Just go out there and focus on your goal and that is to be National Champ. Don’t worry about the ten minutes that will follow or the fact that you’ll be wearing one of nCw’s elite titles. Just act as if it were any ordinary match.”
It wasn’t just an ordinary match though. As cheesy as it may sound, this has been a dream of mine from the moment Martin took me in and taught me the sport. Even though this wasn’t a World Title match, it was still the type of match that could catapult my career to the next level.
“Falcon, as much as I appreciate the concern, you don’t need to worry about me. I have been waiting for this moment for a very long time now and there is no way that I let myself or anyone else down. I’ve been saying this for awhile now. This is my time to shine. This is my turn. And Steve Awesome and Mike Honcho are not going to able to stop me from accomplishing what I truly deserve.”
Did I deserve it though? Over Mike Honcho sure… that guy is just a scrub. Steve Awesome on the other hand, does everything you want in a fighter. He gives it his all every time he enters the ring. I was really hoping it wouldn’t be enough this time around.
“No matter the outcome though, Cam. No matter the result. This is only the beginning for you. Remember that.”
I appreciated the kind remark, but truthfully. This might be my last shot. I may never find myself in this position again.
“Thanks.”
"This time tomorrow... we'll be celebrating!"
And with that Falcon was gone. Probably to think about more important things like Adam Knite and the World Championship. However it left me to drift into my own thoughts again.
“I have less then twenty-four hours before I fully realize the opportunity I have. It won’t be until Steve Awesome emerges into the arena, title around his waist, millions of fans watching worldwide and thousands in the stands. I had a dream to be a champion, just like everyone this sport had. At Battlegrounds I get a chance to fulfill that dream and rise higher in this sport then I ever have thought of.”
By this time tomorrow I could be a Champion! No… I will be a Champion!
“Steve, you’ll make me earn it… well I’d have it no other way. In fact, I want to make sure I beat you and Honcho at your absolute best so that I know there was nothing left on the table.”
I kept thinking of what would happen if I fail again. I tried my best to zone it out… I couldn’t bare another missed opportunity.
“I am on my way to the top of the organization. I am “the future”. Steve, you are “the past”. You are on your way down. Not that it’s a bad thing. You had a great career, but now it’s time for someone new. It’s about time nCw had some change. At Battlegrounds… Forgotten completes it’s take over.”
I pause for a moment.
“I will become National Champion!”
Failure was not an option this time.
