{Complacency is the death of all good ideas. Karras pondered that as he sat on the edge of the stage, by the pulpit. The congregation had exited almost an hour ago, but he hadn't moved since then. He was too busy thinking. Wondering if he was still doing the right thing.}
Karras: Father.. This road has not been easy. I know these men will not willingly listen, but if I cannot force them, how will they learn? How can I show them the err of their ways if they get rewarded anyway? I don't know the answer to that. Maybe it's me.. isn't it?
{Karras looks up at the ceiling, saying nothing, then looking down.}
Karras: I see. I understand Father. I must endure.
{Desiree entered, moving slowly, not to interrupt his reverie, taking the seat beside him.}
Desiree: Chi eravate che comunicate con, il Padre?
Karras: The Lord, Sister.
{Desiree doubted that. Nobody really talked to God, right? You more or less just stared at the sky or ceiling until you got whatever answer you were looking for. Or doubted yourself.}
Desiree: Ah, I see. Hey, no Sunday wrestling this time.
Karras: I saw. Apparently I have another large reason to be wary, anyway.
Desiree: Why? You're just facing one guy.
Karras: There's a lot to this.. one guy.
Desiree: He's facing you, on Suspense. How good can he be?
Karras: Legendary.
Desiree: That's giving him a lot of credit.
Karras: If anyone deserves that kind of credit, it's Lance Ryan.
Desiree: Oh, do tell.
Karras: First ballot hall of famer, induction class. Only man to hold the nCw World title more than once. A dominant force in the ring, or out of it. I have my work cut out for me.
Desiree: So do the whole God is greater than you speech..
Karras: That's stating the obvious. It's also not going to work.
Desiree: Why not?
Karras: He'll simply tell me God won't help me. And I can scream till I'm blue in the face to the contrary, but it won't matter. Or he'll tell me I'm wrong and give some great science debate on how God couldn't possibly exist. And obviously, I can't prove him right in any way.
Desiree: He's an idiot. He doesn't understand that the whole God doesn't exist spiel is a theoretical debate. You can't prove a being of superior power doesn't exist by just saying.. well, nobodies ever seen him, so it must not be there.
Karras: That's unenlightenment, not idiocy.
Desiree: Spin it whatever way you want Padre. Doesn't change what it is.
In the greatness of your majesty you threw down those who opposed you. You unleashed your burning anger; it consumed them like stubble.
Exodus 15:7
Karras: I'd like to say that's about me, like I'm going to be some sort of righteous flame here to purge nCw of it's evil, but that's not going to happen this week, or any time soon it appears. But it's about God, plain and simple. A force that does not have to be seen to be felt. You can label it whatever you want, that's just religion talking. Religion is just a way for one person to make themselves heard more than someone else. Who has more followers, bigger churches, a better 'God' as it were. We all read the same smurfing book, don't we? And don't give me anything about the names, you could go to a Mosque and it would be the same as what you learned in Sunday school, just the places and names different.
Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.
Psalm 150:2
Karras: But this is not a theological debate, this is wrestling. And when you think of wrestling, and nCw, when the word God is thrown around, it's nearly always in reference to Lance Ryan. A man who single handedly etched this company into history by leaving his mark on it. But, he suffered from the same avarice as everyone else does. He got caught in the now. And when he felt that he finished his work, he had that empty place inside his soul. A life unfulfilled as it were. Cold and alone, aching for something to take the place of the void. Until he's left with but one desire, to return to do what he does best. And now, here he is.
You say you have strategy and military strength—but you speak only empty words. On whom are you depending, that you rebel against me?
Isiah 36:5
Karras: As it stands right now Lance, the words are empty. At this point, lecturing becomes a little hazy, for it's hard to tell a man like you what he believes is wrong, when frankly I have no idea where you stand. What I do know is why you always find a way back. Why you always regret leaving every time you do, even when your own body is screaming for you to give it a break. So I'm going to give you the choice. Say the word and I'll give you the answers you need to finally leave the ring behind, and enjoy retirement, happy and comfortable. Don't, and there's not a damn thing I can do for you.
{Karras leaned back until he was flat on the stage, staring up at the ceiling. Desiree looked down at him a long moment, then whispered.}
Desiree: Prendalo alla base, il padre
Karras: In minuto, Sorella.
{Fade.}
