The rays of the early afternoon sun flicker across the battered floorboards of Halifax's North End Gym, causing shadows to flutter across the floor and along the establishment's jaundiced, nicotine stained walls. The camera follows these shadows as they make their way past a series of series of tattered, badly faded fight posters, until they close in upon the masked figure of Terminus, standing in silence near the back corner of the gym.
At the point, the camera focuses in upon the masked man as he examines old, battered burlap heavy bag that hangs before him, allowing the viewer to note the look of contemplation contained within his bright blue eyes. The man known to some as The New Age Punisher doesn't appear to notice the presence of the camera crew, and continues to gaze at the bag for a moment before reaching out and pushing it with the fingertips of one hand. The bag begins to sway back and forth upon its chain, making loud creaking sounds all the while, and Terminus smiles slightly through his mask as he watches the bag swing before him in such a manner as to indicate that it might collapse to the floor at any second.
Terminus, speaking softly as he stares straight ahead: This bag has certainly seen better days, and a lot of people have asked me why I haven't replaced it with something that's more modern, and seemingly more durable. In each case, they'll take one look at the bag, and automatically assume that it's outlived its usefulness...
For the first time, Terminus turns his attention toward the camera, and stares into the lens through eyes that no longer display contemplation, but simply a mixture of certainty and focus.
Terminus: ...And, in each case, I respond by telling them that they're assumption is sadly mistaken.
In each case, I'll tell them that this bag has been here ever since I first started coming to this gym almost twenty years ago, and has absorbed every single bit of punishment that I have been able to dish out during that period of time.
When I first started coming here, I used to spend hours firing away at the bag until my hands were bruised and bloody and swollen. Of course, I wasn't very good at striking when I first arrived, so the bag didn't budge even a single inch when I hit it. It simply continued to hang there, seemingly taunting me with its presence, and asking me if that I was all that I was capable of doing to it.
I felt nothing but anger toward this bag whenever I left the gym, and that anger compelled me to improve my power and technique until such time as a single blow was able to cause this bag to shudder from the impact as it swung violently upon its chain. I would spend hours propelling my fist or my foot into the bag with as much force as I could generate, and on more than one occasion it seemed as though I would be able to cause it to split apart at the seams, and collapse in a heap to the ground.
But, I never was able to make that happen. This bag continued to withstand all the punishment that I was able to inflict, and not once did it fall.
After a while, I realized that I no longer felt any anger toward this. That anger that I felt toward the bag was replaced with an immense amount of respect for its ability to withstand this abuse...
But, as I watched it hang there, I also realized that the sight of this bag elected another set of emotions...It ignited a sense of hope within me; because I knew that if this bag was capable of withstanding any amount of abuse so that it continue to serve its purpose, then I was capable of doing the same thing.
Terminus stares at the bag, and nods his head toward it, almost as if to say a silent thank you, before turning his attention back to the camera.
Terminus: I think that lesson, as much as anything else, has been what has allowed me to achieve the success that I have in the industry ever since I decided to pursue a career as a professional wrestler. That lesson allowed me to win titles of one sort or another in every federation that I've ever entered, and it allowed me to win the World Heavyweight Championship of a federation known as The Premiere Wrestling Alliance in two separate occasions, and hold that particular championship for an extended period of time during the course of each reign.
But, what is of considerably more importance is the manner in which I was able to win these titles.
I won my first title by fighting a bitter rival in a match where there were no rules, and won despite suffering multiple lacerations after I was unceremoniously tossed into a pit of barbed wire. My second match was fought under regular rules, but I still had to fight for close to an hour against three competitors who were just as determined to win as I was. By the end of that encounter, my torso was coated in bruises, and I could barely draw breath into my lungs, yet I was still able to find a way to deal with the pain that I was feeling and secure the victory.
Now, I grant that I'm not so arrogant as to believe that success in these other federations will automatically translate to a similar amount of success in New Championship Wrestling. But, the success that I've had in other federations does mean that I've found myself in situations where I've had to overcome severe forms of adversity, and that I know what I'm capable of enduring in order to find a way to return my opponent's abuse in kind.
Terminus takes a single step toward the camera, and while the calm, even tone of voice doesn't change, a look of intensity appears in his eyes as he begins to address the points that his opponent made during his second promotional appearance.
Terminus: So, that's why I found it interesting when William Spencer asked me, in so many words, where I would be willing to go in order to ensure that I emerged as the winner of our contest when the two of us meet inside the ring this week at Friday Night Suspense.
And, I can honestly say that I'll be able to look him in the eye and say that I'm willing to go to any place that is necessary in order to make certain that it's my hand that is raised in victory.
I'm willing to apply as many submission holds as is necessary to ensure that William's limbs aren't able to function in their desired capacity. If that particular strategy isn't successful, then I'm just as willing to strike William with as much force as I possibly can, and to continue to do so until such time as his body is simply unable to respond to the commands of his mind and his heart.
If the need requires, I have no qualms about taking advantage of an opening created should one of my punches or kicks "accidentally" strays south of the border. I won't hesitate to use the entire Pan American Center as a weapon, and I'll be pleased to do so if that's what is needed to secure the victory.
I'm willing to go to those places, William, in order to secure the win. I'm willing to absorb every single bit of punishment that you're willing to inflict, and I'm willing to shed three drops of your blood for every single drop that you happen to shed of mine...
Terminus takes another step toward the camera, and that look of intensity in his unblinking gaze becomes more and more apparent.
Terminus: And the reason why I'm prepared to this is very simple, William...
I'm prepared to do this to advance a cause that is near and dear to my heart. I'm doing this to solidify, at least in my own mind, the friendship that I've formed with Brad and Megan Kane. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to prove to the world, and to myself, that I can be the type of friend that they can depend upon to back them up when they find themselves in need of my help.
Because, while you may think that my quest to be a true friend to the Kanes pales in comparison to your goal of attaining personal glory, I know that the reverse happens to be true.
For, I too, have fought to advance my own selfish interests in the past, because I was under the impression that capturing a measure of glory would provide me with a sense of satisfaction that I felt was lacking in my life at the time.
But, I realize now that I was wrong...
Because whether you choose to believe it or not, there is no greater satisfaction that a person can feel than to look a person in the eye and know that you've done everything possible to honor the friendship that you have with them...
And, there's no greater disappointment that can be felt than to have to look that same person in the eye and acknowledge the fact that you didn't do everything that was needed to make certain that happened...
That's a feeling that I don't wish to experience at any point in the future, William.
And that's why I'm willing to go to those other places that I had previously mentioned...To make certain that I never have to go to a place that is far, far worse...
Terminus pauses for a moment, takes a deep breath, and prepares to speak once more when the sound of slow clapping can be heard near the entrance of the gym.
The camera whirls around, and focuses upon an attractive woman in her twenties. The most notable features of this woman isn't her dyed red hair, or her flawless facial features, but the radiance that appears in her countenance that indicates that she's in the first flush of pregnancy. However, this radiance is lessened by the look of anger that burns in her eyes as she glares at the masked man.
The New Age Punisher's eyes display a hint of annoyance as he regards the sight of the woman for a moment, but he quickly smooths his features and addresses her using the same calm and matter-of-fact tone of voice that he used to address the camera.
Terminus: Hello, Mary Katherine. What can I do for you?
Mary Katherine MacDonald, as she continues to clap: Oh, I just came here to applaud that inspired, and inspirational address of yours...Bravo, Evan. I must say, you really do have a way with words....
Terminus: Sarcasm never really suited you, M.K. Why are you really here?
M.K.: You want to know why I'm here, Evan? I'm here because I want to know who, exactly, you think you're fooling when you stare into the camera and tell the world of your desire to be a true friend to the Kanes!
Terminus, with a slight shake of the head: M.K...I know you might find this hard to believe at the moment, but I really am sincere about my desire to help Brad and Megan, in whatever manner that is needed. I really do want to prove to them that I can be a true friend...
M.K, as lets out a burst of bitter laughter: Oh, that's rich, Evan. No...Scratch that...That statement was priceless!
You're going to prove your worth as a friend to the Kanes!? You don't even know what that term means!
Terminus, in a slightly strained tone of voice: Mary Katherine...I know that our friendship ended rather badly...
M.K.: Badly!? You attacked my boyfriend without provocation a few weeks ago, and put him in the hospital.
Terminus: You're only partly correct when you make that statement, M.K.
I did attack Jason Sandman, Mary Katherine...But I think we both know that I had a very good reason for doing so.
M.K.: And, that would be...!?
Terminus: Well, for starters, there was the fact he did the exact same thing to me on more than one occasion...
M.K.: That...that was different!
Terminus: Would you care to explain how that was different...?
And, while you're doing so, would you also care to explain why your boyfriend chose to target my wife with any number of threats throughout the course of our acquaintance?
M.K.: You know Jason had changed since that time...!
Terminus: Oh, come on, M.K. You know damned well that Jason was the same abrasive, foul-mouthed A**Hole that he had always been. He would tell you the same thing himself if he were here...
Jason wasn't going to change...And our friendship, such as it was, suffered as a result of that fact. I am sorry that it ended that way, but that's not going to prevent me from moving forward with my life.
It might be in your better interest to do the same...
M.K: No...I think it's in everyone's better interest if the world understands what kind of hypocrite you really are, Evan...And I'm going to make damned good and certain that happens!
Terminus blinks slightly and then takes a single step toward his former friend as he addresses her in an ice-cold tone of voice.
Terminus: What, may I ask, is that supposed to mean?
M.K.: What it means, Evan, is that it would be very interesting to see the look on the face of Brad and Megan Kane were I tell them about some of the events that have taken place in your past...
I've known you a long time, Andrews...And I know some of your secrets...
Terminus spends a long moment glaring in silence at Mary Katherine, before he takes another step forward and addresses this remark with a voice that contains only the slightest hint of menace.
Terminus: That's true...But, of course, it should be noted that I know some of your secrets as well.
And rest assured, I'm willing to reveal them if you make any attempt to sabotage the friendship that I have with the Kanes...
The choice is yours, my "friend". I can only hope that you make the right choice...
M.K. blinks a couple of times, and then her lips curl into a snarl as she hisses her response to that statement.
M.K.: You...You son of a...!!!
I hope William Spencer makes good on his promise and whacks you over the head with that Singapore Cane! I hope he keeps hitting you over the head with it until there's nothing left for him to hit!
Terminus, shrugging: Yes, well you can hope that I suffer that rather unpleasant fate all you want, Mary Katherine, but that doesn't mean that it's going to happen.
After all, you and I both know of another hard-drinking, hard-punching chain smoker who tried to do just that, and you and I both know the extremely dire price that Jason paid each time he made the attempt...
So, I suspect that once my match has been been completed with William Spencer, you're going to find yourself disappointed in me once again...
Only, in this case, I'm not going to feel the least bit bad about the fact that this is going to happen.
Mary Katherine Macdonald goes wide-eyed at the sound of these words, and then staggers backward and stares daggers at Terminus with a look in her eyes that indicates that she may well have preferred it had he simply struck her in a physical manner.
The masked man takes another step forward, leveling a meaningful stare in her direction as he folds his arms across his chest.
Terminus: I should probably get back to my preparations, M.K. I've got a flight to catch shortly, and I wanted to get some final training in before I take off.
So, with that in mind, is there anything else that you want to say to me before I resume my training?
M.K.: Actually, there is, Evan. I just wanted to say that I hope with all of my heart to see a day where you're rotting in the deepest layer of Hell! And, make no mistake, I'll do everything that I possibly can to make certain that damned well happens!
With that, Mary Katherine MacDonald spins on her heel, and storms out of the exit, never once looking back at the man she once called her friend. Terminus shakes his head as he watches her leave, and then turns his attention back toward the bag, murmuring a final comment under his breath as he begins to walk toward it...
Terminus: Go ahead and try, Mary Katherine...
But know that Hell is one of the places that I'm wiling to go in order to keep the promises that I made to myself and to the people that still consider me to be their friend...
And know that I'm willing to send other people to that place if they even consider the thought of preventing me from achieving the goal that I've set for myself...
After this Friday, William Spencer might understand just how serious I am when I make such a statement...And, really, the only sin that he's committed is being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I wonder if there will come a time when you come to realize that, as well, M.K...Because, as far as I'm concerned, if you're planning to do what I think you're going to do, then the consequences of your actions will be far more grievous than the pain that my opponent will ensure at Suspense this week...
With that, Terminus steps forward and unleashes a blistering four punch combination into the bag, and smiles slightly as he watches the bag shudder and rocket back on its chain from the impact of these blows. For a moment, it appears as though the suspended object will split apart, and collapse to the ground but ultimately it survives this abuse, refuses to fall, and resumes its normal position so that it can serve its purpose once more.
And as the shot fades, the smile beneath the mask of Terminus grows just a little wider, because he knows that, regardless of the places he has to go, he'll able to say that he was capable doing the same thing...
Regardless of what William Spencer does to him, Terminus will continue to hang in there...
Regardless, of what Spencer tries to do, The New Age Punisher knows very well that, when all is said and done, it is his purpose that shall be served.
