My head was down as the camera crew had just arrived to get some of my thoughts on my upcoming match against Rob Diamond. Successful as a tag-team…in ways that I would rather not remember. This week, we would be enemies -- we would both be wanting that X-Division Championship, and I know how badly I want it…I crave it. Have for three years now. How badly did he want to keep it, though? My lips parted slightly while I still refused to look into the camera, but I was fighting with myself to get those first words out.
“I hope you’re happy, Rob Diamond. For what you did on Collision was completely inexcusable…there are the people in the industry that will always say that a win’s a win. It doesn’t matter how they do it, all that matters is that they do it. You are one of those people, one of the people that says it doesn’t matter how you win so long as you do win -- that’s you. That’s not me.”
Slowly shaking my head, my eyes shifted to look at the camera just a second prior to my head lifting to also look into the camera.
“I understand that we’re both in this game for almost the same reason…we’re both in the game for the simple reason that we want championships. We want that glory. I’ve said it on numerous occasions that I want that glory not just for me, but for the people that cheer for me. For the people that are seen as the ones that can’t do it, that are always looked down on and expected not to be much. I get that glory for them to show them that they can do it! That they just have to set their mind to it, and they can accomplish it. Without taking the low road. Without taking the shortcuts.”
Suddenly, I did feel a sense of pride…knowing that this is what I was fighting for. Fighting to show people that you don’t have to take the low road, you can fight honorably and it will ultimately payoff. I lifted myself from the chair that I sat in, still in the home of Tara’s, luckily…I still have that feeling in my gut that I got her angry with me by what she would say is my own stubbornness.
“You…fight for yourself. You fight for that gold to be yours, for that glory to be yours -- and yours alone. No one did it for you, no one helped you on the way…you did it all by yourself. The General Manager didn’t help you. You got up to that X-Division Championship, why should you share that glory?”
I wasn’t going to do what he possibly has had to deal with on numerous occasions. Being accused of having things handed to him simply because he knew someone up higher in the ranks…it would have been ideal, but for how much disrespect has come from him and even from myself, I wasn’t going to let it go any further. He earned everything he got…on his own. As far as I’m concerned.
“How we fight for it…may not make much of a difference to you, but it makes the whole difference to me.”
I felt my voice just lift as I mentioned the “How” on our fighting. It did matter to me how we won…he would have been fine with using the ropes to gain that extra leverage, or…even worse, as what actually happened was both of them being blindsided and Rob just taking advantage of it. I’d rather have an absolute clean win. To settle down a little, I sat back down.
“At Collision, when we took on the number one contenders for the Tag-team Titles, you saw an opportunity for us to take the win after you spit in my face. After you started problems with me. You kept your eyes on the prize, and you saw that opportunity to end the match with the victory. Congratulations. You gave us a dirty win -- were you too dumb to realize that something happened? I looked back at the tape, and I saw Dirty Deal take that cheap shot, and that’s just not how I want to win, Rob. You forced me to get a win because of that. Because of your greed! If I didn’t have to deal with you, I would have gotten back into that ring and fight both Terminus and William if you were too much of a coward to get back into that ring and restart the match. I would have fought them.”
True. If I wasn’t so caught up with fighting with Rob Diamond, and laying him out, I would have gotten back into the ring and fought both of my opponents on if need be -- I should have demanded the referee restart the match, and toss Rob’s limp body back into the ring for them to be able to take the win. Just not me, though.
“Sunday night, you saw a different side of me. Usually I am not that type of person who will deck you as I did -- I saw that smile on your face, by the way…after watching that tape numerous times, that smile just always stood out to me. It stood out and I realized why you did that: Because you accomplished what you set out to do!”
Realization hit me. This is all that he did want to do…make me angry. And he succeeded. One, “O”, Rob.
“You wanted to see the angry side of me…you wanted to push all of my buttons, and make me go completely over the edge. Now you know what it takes to set me off, but I think you know better than to let me get angry again…there’s something else that you should realize after you got me angry. You didn’t beat me. I was the one standing tall at the end of the match, just like I will be the one standing tall at the end of Road To The Gold with that X-Division Championship in my hand. I think that you know, deep inside your head, that you can’t beat me.”
Could he beat me? I don’t think he really can, because we all saw what happened at Collision…
“This upcoming Sunday…will be my night! My night to become the X-Division Champion, and be standing among one of the few in New Championship Wrestling…with gold.”
The daydream came back to me…the dream of being able to walk out with a belt of gold in my hand, and more importantly, the X-Division Championship. A long journey home.
“The beautiful thing…the very beautiful thing about Collision, after I punched you…”
I leaned forward in my seat, and my palms slowly rubbed together as I felt a smile start to crack onto my face.
“I’ve never felt better!”
Kind of a weird thing to admit, considering I enjoy giving that respect to everybody! Rob Diamond said that I give it out so easily, when the reason that I do just that is because I feel that everyone deserves the respect that I give them. They all get into that ring, much like me, much like the champions, and wrestle a match week in and week out -- Rob Diamond isn’t excluded from this. I still have a great deal of respect for him because he does what I do.
“I know, I know that it’s just not the type of person I am. I’m not the type of person who’s going to show disrespect to my opponent no matter how much they may disrespect me…but you did find a way to push those buttons, Rob. That’s quite alright. It’s not going to stop me from being able to walk out with that X-Division Championship this Sunday.”
With nothing more to say, I leaned back in the chair again and drew in a deep breath while they announced that they were done.
“I hope you’re happy, Rob Diamond. For what you did on Collision was completely inexcusable…there are the people in the industry that will always say that a win’s a win.
