(Steve has my permission both as an admin and his opponent to post two rps on Sunday. -Mark.)
"I'm going to break you."
"What does that even mean?"
"It means exactly what it says, I'm going to break you."
"Ok, Ivan. Wanna get the boxing gloves on and go a couple rounds?"
"No."
"Gonna try and put a saddle on me so I can be ridden like a good horse?"
"No."
"Gonna tie me to a chair and interrogate me until I tell you where the bomb is?"
"No."
Pause.
"Are you finished?"
"You're serious aren't you?"
"Yes."
"Alright, so what do you want?"
"I want you to get into this ring so we can start."
"Well... ok.. but you'd better have prepared for this."
"It's not me I'd be worrying about."
Turns out it was myself I needed to be concerned with. As soon as I hit that ring, a bell rang, and a fresh wrestling student jumped in, facing me down. So, we fought. I thought it was just a simple training spar. Turns out I was wrong. The man fought me tooth and nail, like he would win the nCw World title if he managed to pin me. He was good, but nowhere near good enough. I thought that would be the end of it. I turned to her after he was defeated, and she was watching a stopwatch. A minute later, she clicked the button and pointed behind me.
"Watch your back."
"What?"
I turned just in time to see another dudes fist almost take my jaw off.
"Told you so."
It continued like that for damn near three hours. I lost count of how many guys I had to wade through, each one determined to be the one that put his name on the list as my defeater. The faces started to blend together until I couldn't tell one guy from the other. I was sure I fought the same guy more than once. While I only got a minute to rest in between fights, they would sit for a half hour after facing me. I think that small tidbit was the only thing that kept me going.
"Hey, Kyle.. wanna get some lun.. what's he doing?"
"Finding his edge."
"He looks about dead."
"When I'm done, Robert. He may wish he was."
"How could you do this?"
"How could I not?"
"It just seems to cruel. Like something I would do."
"Do you want to go next?"
"No spank you."
"I thought so."
Even a lithium battery will eventually die if used too much. I had just finished off another one, merely falling on him rather than trying an actual pin attempt. I used the ropes to try and pull myself to my feet, somehow knowing without knowing that she wouldn't let me quit without losing. When I hung there, using the middle rope for support, and looked into her set determined face, I knew I was right. She walked closer, staring at me with those determined eyes.
"You think this is bad..?"
"Huff... thought.. crossed... my mind..."
"How can you expect to find someone else's limits when you don't even know you're own?"
"I.. was just.. gonna.. wing it..."
"Not good enough. You do that, and you can kiss that title goodbye."
"...Maybe..."
"No maybe about it. I know best. I'm going to push you until you absolutely can't go any more. And then keep pushing."
"Why?"
"So you can be better than you imagine you can be."
It sounded harsh. Making someone fight until they can no longer stand. I admit, it was stupidly prideful of me to not secretly take a dive halfway. But she probably would have seen through that. She could always see through my secrets. Somehow, I found the strength to stand.
"Fine... bring it on."
She did. And it hurt. My feet hurt from all the kicks I threw. My knuckles burned from all the jaws they connected with. My cheeks stung from all the fists that crashed into them. I'd like to say the story had a happy ending. That somehow I won out against impossible odds. But I won't lie. She hired twenty seven promising wrestling students to have a go at this. I made it through their rotation two full times, and halfway through the third, even caused six of them to give up themselves. But in the end I fell. I am only human after all. Her words still rang in my ears.
"You think Steve is going to give you any respite?"
"You're the best in the world, start acting like it!"
"I bet Adam would win the rematch."
I don't remember what move he did to finish it. I just remember darkness. I never heard the three count, only the sound of waves on a beach. I awoke late in the day, still utterly exhausted, but at least my eyes worked again. She was leaning over me, her soft hands massaging my mass of bruises. The sensation was wonderful, I almost forgot she was the cause of this whole mess.
"Good. You're awake."
"Tell me that we're continuing, and I will eat you."
"Tempting, but no. We're done. You found your limit. Rob took the under, and now owes me fifty bucks."
"I suppose.. tomorrow night I'll thank you for this. But right now I want to pop you one. That is if my arm would move."
She laughed. I always liked the way she laughed, light and carefree.
"Sure, sure. Get some sleep. It's late."
"Good idea."
Now it's early morning, and I'm awake. Awake.. and ready. I realize now what she meant by this. She knows this business more than she lets on, you know. She knows the kind of man Steve Awesome has degenerated into. She's seen his mopey face, his can't be bothered attitude, and she knows what he'll do.
Find the shortcuts.
Now, I'm truly prepared for that. I know how far I can really go, and now, I would take a guess that the line has been pushed back just a bit. I'm ready Steven, the question is..
Are you?
Can you find the secret ending? The optional boss that's twice as hard as the games final boss? I heard what you said, about beating the game and all that. But the glorious thing about competitions like this is that they never end. You can never afford to slack. You cannot afford to act like you've got nothing left to do, because there's always another hurdle. Always another man who thinks he can take you, and always that man who eventually can. I learned that lesson, and all it cost me was a match here or there. But you're just the same old Steve Awesome. Never changing...
Rarely improving.
But don't feel bad. You're in the majority. Goodbye, Steven. It was nice knowing you.

A mirror of you
Reflections of you
You're showing what you feel like inside
Need
The power of two
Just me and you
An image that you hold in your mind

Sometimes you're wrong
And then sometimes you're right
You don't expect me to put up a fight
I'm sick and tired of all of your lies
I'm sick and tired and I'm saying Goodbye
And then sometimes you're right
